Everything About Ammo Storage

How to Keep Ammunition Safe
Let me start with a hypothetical. Let's say you go to your town's greatest butcher shop, You purchase 20 pounds of the greatest ribeyes that man and beast have ever created in partnership. Are you going to throw them on your lawn at home? Or are you going to place them on your refrigerator's best shelf with care? It's a hypothetical because the answer is simple. The standards for storing ammunition aren't all that dissimilar. (Do not grill your ammunition.)
Now that we know that, why would you keep your ammunition in anything less than ideal conditions? It's not just a precious commodity, but it's also one that depends on your ability to have fun at the range, put dinner on the table, and defend yourself and your family. You must take good care of your ammunition!
Ammo Storage Best Practices
If you store your ammunition properly, you can expect it to work just as the manufacturer intended for the rest of your life. If you're careful enough, it could even become a family heirloom.
Your grandson may one day tell their robot butler, "This was Grandpa's 9mm ammunition."
You must consider three things to get to that point: light, temperature, and humidity.
Protect Ammo from Light When Storing It
When it comes to light, the rule is simple: don't let it touch your ammunition.
UV radiation from the sun is a ferocious force. It's just as bad for ammunition as it is for antique automobiles, gremlins, and artworks. Because you're the type of responsible person who doesn't leave dangerous items sitting around in the open, this is a simple problem to solve.
Keep your ammo in its box, in an ammo can, in your closet, and it won't be harmed by the pink fingers of morning.
Keep your ammunition in a cool place
Heat will wreak havoc on munitions quickly. When heated to over 120 degrees Fahrenheit, many propellant compounds begin to evaporate, reducing accuracy. Freezing ammo, on the other hand, can permanently affect a bullet's ballistic performance, particularly if it's constructed of several materials that expand and contract at different rates. The worst case scenario for ammo is when it is stored under varying temperatures. As a result, places like basements, attics, and garages should be avoided.
Once again, it's a simple fix: Your ammo will be as happy as a pig if you store it at room temperature.

Make Sure Your Powder Is Dry
Humidity is likely the most difficult factor to overcome, especially if you live south of the Mason-Dixon line, as many of our brothers and sisters do. A cartridge that has been exposed to moisture for an extended period of time will swiftly deteriorate, especially if the shell does not include protective nickel plating. Brass-cased shotshells were not very popular in the South West Pacific theater for this reason. Because of the dampness, basements, attics, and garages are even less suitable for keeping ammunition.
So, how can we get rid of the humidity? There are several options.
Obtain an Ammunition Can
To begin with, a good ammo container with a rubber gasket is a fantastic way to avoid moisture from rusting, tarnishing, corroding, or otherwise rendering your ammunition useless. It's worth noting that the gasket on an old ammo can may have dried out and cracked over time, but the flexible rubber on a new can is better at keeping water out.

Waterproof, watertight, shock resistant and more portable than your fancy water bottles. Not only are these cases tough, but have endless uses. It's the perfect lockable case for airline travel and protecting small valuables like your phone, wallet and passport.
Locate Some Dessicant
Second, you can go the extra mile by storing your ammunition with dessicant packs such as silica gel. You know, the kind that comes with a pair of dress shoes or a wallet in a small pouch labeled "Do not eat?" If you can resist eating it, silica gel does a fantastic job of keeping ammo nice and dry in storage.

On the market, there are many excellent desiccants and dehumidifiers designed expressly for ammunitions. Finally, don't keep ammo on the floor or anywhere else where moisture could collect.
Knowing how to store ammo such that it stays fresh and ready to shoot has a lot of advantages. You'll be able to not only buy in bulk, which is considerably more cost-effective in the long run, but you'll also be able to stockpile the materials you'll need to come out on top in the event of a true rainy day. Just be aware of your limitations: if you've just returned from a trudge through the woods where your ammo was exposed to the weather, you'd be better off firing it that day rather than storing it. Also, before storing your ammunition, try writing the date on it. That way, you'll be able to get the newest, greatest ammo at a moment's notice.
