So you're a new gun owner who recently purchased your first firearm. Congratulations! So, what are you going to do now? Becoming a new gun owner might be one of life's most rewarding experiences. You're starting a lifelong activity that can both protect you and your family while also providing a sense of community and enjoyment. People buy weapons for a variety of reasons, but there are certain fundamental rules that all new gun owners should follow in order to maintain their passion for firearms while also protecting themselves.

Let's take a look at the fundamentals of gun safety as given out by Gunsweek:

1. All weapons are loaded and ready to fire. Whether you're shooting at home, on the range, or in a competition. Treat every gun as though it were loaded in any situation.

2. Never point your weapon at something you don't want to destroy. Your hand and legs are included in this. This will take time to master, so proceed with caution at all times.

3. Keep your finger off the trigger until you're sure you've got the target in your sights. Again, achieving this in high-stress situations will take practice. It is the responsibility of a new gun owner to practice this, especially if the gun will be used for self-defense.

4. Establish your target and what is behind it.

Here's a video that explains it even more clearly:

You have a great deal of responsibility on your shoulders.

Many people buy a new pistol with the intention of solely using it for home protection or carrying it legally. "I'm the only one who will see this gun, and it only affects me," you may have reasoned. This is simply not the case. A gun has an impact on everyone you come into touch with, whether you keep it locked away in a gun safe at home or carry it with you. It is critical that you understand the importance of securely storing (at home or on your body). To correctly carry your handgun and avoid a misfire, use a sturdy holster. Every time you hold your pistol as a new gun owner, you may feel a sense of power. That authority must be respected. You have an obligation to do all possible to avoid accidents. You also have a responsibility not to act irresponsibly. Aspir to be a gun community ambassador. Your best tool for becoming more comfortable with the responsibilities will be training.

Understand the legalities of carrying a firearm

New gun owners should look into the state's concealed and open carry rules. Some states are more lenient than others, while others outright oppose open carry laws. Before you take your pistol anywhere, make sure you've done your homework. You should also look into how to notify the authorities if you have a firearm on you. If you're caught breaking the law, you could face fines, jail time, or other serious consequences.

Practice, practice, and practice some more

Your pistol may seem awkward and unwieldy in your hands as a new gun owner. This will only become easier with practice, so get to the range and get shooting! Learn how to disassemble and reassemble your firearm. Learn how to correctly glance down your sights and enroll in some self-defense lessons to help you. All of these things will come in handy if you ever find yourself in an emergency circumstance. The only way to improve at something is to practice it, and this is especially true when it comes to guns. It's much more important if you're dealing with pistols, as even the most seasoned gun owners can get caught off guard.

Join a group and enjoy your new pastime.

Shooting weapons may be a great deal of joy. Joining a gun club, for example, can help you improve your shooting skills while also allowing you to socialize with your peers. To become a better gun owner, you'll be exposed to many sorts of guns and safety procedures. Plus, you'll have a wealth of information to draw on when making your next firearm purchase! Join a group that meets your needs to turn your passion into a pastime.
